About the artist
BONNIE BRAHMS
Born and raised on a ranch near White River, South Dakota, the works of this self-taught artist reflect her love of nature and her unique ability to capture the special individual characteristics of her subjects.
Dean Schueler, Center for Western Studies at Augustana College, states, “She really captures whatever she’s painting and interprets it boldly. Other people can paint the falls and they can paint buffalo but Bonnie’s paintings come right at you off the canvas.” Dean has worked with Brahms on art exhibits at the Center. He said her paintings reflect South Dakota life, but in a unique way, “Hers is a bold style” Schueler said. If you need to be part saleswoman to succeed as a prairie artist, then Brahms has an edge. The energetic blond, twice Grandmother, is always on the move-with her art career and her family life.
Bonnie feels almost anything can become an inspiration for a painting and she is seldom without a camera to catch whatever she might see that day. When possible she paints on location, like at the Big Sioux River Falls or her families ranch. Recent travels in the southwestern United States and Europe have added to her subject matter, inspiring paintings of the Grand Canyon in vivid layers of color, and urban scenes of Rome and Venice depicting the people and the rich sculptural traditions of southern Europe.
